These are actually tetras I guess but this is the closest to a forum for these. Anyway, I am going to get between 10 - 20 of these through my local fish store. I have a planted 100 gallon tank I plan to put them in. Anyone had any exsperience with these guys. It is kind of an experiment to see if I can raise and maybe spawn them but I hear they are as bad if not worse than piranha about knocking off their friends and relatives. Just wanted to talk baout them and my project a bit. Please comment if you have any insight.

well, i hope that the tank will be a species tank and that you have some long tools to use to prune and maintain the plants as you will not want to stick your bare hands in the tank. but other than that, it should look great! and I'm sure you'll get some spawning in such a big tank

you should be fine.
theyre realy not as bad as people say they are, occasionally you'll lose one.
but thats about it.
i'd put 50 in there if i were you.LOL

actually, they are not "tetras". they are monotypic characins (as in they dont fit into any sub genre). dont let the common name fool you.

these guys generally do not breed in captivity.there have been claims, but i have yet to come up with any hard evidence or documentation in my studies. however they are a great species to keep,. and have a life span of roughly 8 years.

also, there is no need to worry about your hands. they will not attack them, and even if they do, it is highly unlikely the will do any damage.

considering you have a 100g tank, and are only suggesting a small shoal of 10-20, im guessing you have other fish in there already?
keep in mind that these are best kept in a species only tank, and do not do well with tankmates. other fish will likely end up dead.
if you dont have other fish, i would go for a much larger shoal. 20 will look very small in your 100g (though im sure they would be more than happy to have a 100g all to themselves)

visit the exodon link in my sig, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions about these fish.
