I just picked up a new standard 90 gallon tank for $163 with tax last week, (Is that a good deal?)

But anyway..

I posted a few weeks ago asking about stocking options with my JD, possibly an oscar, with rainbow fish as dithers. Im leaning away from that and I was wondering if anyone has ever kept a shoal of 8-10 bucktoothed tetras (Exodon paradoxus) with their Jack Dempsey or other CA fish? Right now the only fish that is going to go into the new 90 is my JD. I want some other fish to keep it interesting :)

I have read on some sites they are peaceful.. http://www.aqua-fish.net/show.php?id=143&cur_lang=2&what=fish

and other site that they are very aggressive.. http://www.aquariacentral.com/species/db.cgi?db=fresh&uid=default&ID=0190&view_records=1

Here is a picture.

I dont know, but they keep Exodons with pirhana in one of the freshwater exhibits at Sea World. They dont seem to bother each other much. There are about a dozen pirhana and about 2-3 dozen seemingly snack size exodons all in the same tank. I bet they dont bother each other though since Sea World keeps them fed pretty well. Don't know if this info helps or not.

Exodon paradoxus is a scale-eater... and more. Count on them damaging your Dempseys, bite by bite. These are aggressive little buggers, and beautiful! I intend to buy some eventually. my lfs gets them in from time to time and the've thrown in feeders for my amuzement before. It lasts about 5 seconds for a sall group to devour a feeder gf there own size. Oh and they will pick the weakest in the group till it's history too.

You have to keep more then 8-10 in a tank, they will be to aggresive towards each other if kept in that small of a shoal. And secondly you JD will be harrassed non stop. I would pick some thing else to go in with your JD, I had 23 in a 75 gallon and you could tell with out more then 8 to 10 there would be to much aggression towards a memeber of the shoal.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I will scratch exodons off of the list of possible fish :)

Thats crazy that those little guys can cause so much damage, beautiful fish tho..

Exodons with large CA americans = expensive feeders for "large" cichlids
Exodons with small cichlids = they will tend to strike at cichlids even a few inches bigger than them, if there are a shool of the them at 8 or more, but 3 exodons will tend to leave even the small cichlids, but the exodons are more interested on picking each other in a small group.
All my experience with exodons is failure, they are best kept to themselves in schools of 8 or more, the more the better. And also this fish is so fragile and will easily die from minor injury. One more thing, dont believe the hype that this fish is so fast, they can live with anything bec. of speed. Partly true, since when they sleep at night all bets are off.

As stated above exos should be in a species only tank and you should keep as a min 12 + in a shoal...................thats what i have in my 30 gal and they are amazing and beautiful fish .......no probs in the last 10 months:)

Actually i have not ever had one of my exo's die in the last 10+ months (species tank).......In my opinion they are extremly hardy fish and a pleasure to keep....
