Hey guys, just to make this clear, this is NOT me who is doing it, but my nephew. My nephew is into the hobby as well and thinks he knows a lot and he wants to get around 10 exodon in with his crenicichla saxatilis in a 20 gallon tank. I told him just to keep the crenicichla and not put anything else in it, but he decided to get 4 exodon and now wants 6 more. I told him these won't work out, but he wants to add more so I figured I'd ask on here if that'd be ok just so I can show him that other experienced hobbyists agree it won't work. He thinks because he has a sponge filter and aquaclear 110 that the filtration is ok and the guy at the lfs told him that the exodon and crenicichla will not mess with eachother. So far, the exodon and crenicichla have gotten along fine (or atleast from what I have seen and heard from him).

Wouldn’t mix the two. Time will tell if it lasts.

A 20g is too small for a saxatilis type pike. They get up to 10". You need at least 75g. The exodon numbers are too small. You want closer to 30. If they dont eat the pike's scales, the pike will make a go for the exodons.

I was under the impression the pike got around 6-7 inches. The pike and exodon seemingly get along fine, no nipped fins, missing scales, or anything. Thanks for informing me about the size of the pike cichlid. As for the exodon, like kno4te said, time will tell if the fish mix or not

Bad idea on so many levels. Your nephew may be like me though and have to learn the hard way.

Saxatilis family is large in species numbers. Without the tail, many males are 7" standard length. C. sveni are one of the largest saxatilis pikes.

He got it as a ringtail pike, right now its about 5 inches. I just told him about what you you said about how the pike cichlid will attack the exodon and how the exodon may attack the pike cichlid but he said they are getting along fine and that they can both hurt eachother so they won't go after eachother. Stupid if you ask me, but that's what he said, at this point I think it's just best to let him do what he wants and let him learn the hard way

It's a male saxatilis type. The catch location would narrow down as to what saxatilis species it is.
