Expanded Clay as bio media?

Anyone here ever use it as filter media? was/is it any good?
It's like a gravel for growing plants in but I heard from a LFS owner that is a decent filter media and it's fairly cheap.

Never used it, however looking at the material it does look promising. My only concern when viewing the first link was "does it float or sink"?. Let us know how this works out!
