expanding foam

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes if it''s sealed there shouldn't be a problem. Be aware that it's flexible and coating it with something that dries hard may lead to the topcoat cracking and chipping off. Silicon is probably a better sealant for it since it will bend too.

Curing polyester resin releases VOCs that eat some foams - read the box. Alt, use an epoxy. Per Gourami Swami Gourami Swami 's wise suggestion, either use an epoxy with a little "give" or set fibreglass, or go with another rubberized/rubberizing option. Polyurethane (GM5200?) might be good, maybe/likely to stick better than silicone but goopy & a little more costly. I hear good things about that SpraySeal stuff, also, if all you want to do is keep the water out.
Some spray foams do dry quite hard - seal soft if soft, hard you can be flexible ;)

I made a very large rock pile and used spray foam as my base to lighten the decor and stuck the rocks on top of the foam. I didn’t seal the exposed cured foam on the back or bottom of the decor and everything in my tank is fine, it’s been in my tank for almost 2 years.

I used a mix of black pond expanding foam and great stuff. No harm after it cured.

I had to layer my foam, spray some let it cure for days or weeks then add another layer and wait again. Repeat until desired results.

Something to note, even though I used rocks on the outside the foam it still wanted to float and I ended up carving some of the back foam out and weighed down the decor with more rocks Stuffed inside the foam base. I also found I didn’t let it cure long enough and was liquid sticky goop when I carved it out.

Here are a couple of pictures
