For the past several weeks i've been thinking of ways to add more volume to my aquarium. I finally got off my lazy butt and started to put things on paper. My plans are to use my old 18g as an isolation tank and where the heater and the air stones will be to make sure that my DO is up. Then I plan on using my 10g as a planted tank to help reduce my nitrate levels. I dont plan on this eliminating my needing to do water changes but rather increase the water quality. Because I'm limited on space the who setup is between the main tank and an entertainment center so i had to build a platform with wheels on it to pull the whole thing out when its full. The platform is 1" laminated pine on 4 casters rated at 80lb each. I had it full outside for severl hours and had no issues with it so I think its good. Here are some pics of what i have done so far. Lots of work left to do.... So please give me your input on thinkgs i've maybe overlooked

Getting the water from the top tank to the bottom i'm planning on using my old hang on filter that flows 150 gph. I drilled a hole and ran pvc to the bottom tank. Then from the bottom tank I got a hefty pump to get water back to the main tank. The sump is rated at almost 200 gph @ 6', so i think i might have to restrict it to keep the levels all the same. I just need to get a 2nd pump for the main tank that will flow 150 gph @ 2'.

Pics for views

I love it :)

Great outside the box thinking..

Do you think the overflow box concept with the power-filter will work? I have been thinking about doing the same sort of thing.. Also, if your power goes off, the power filter will run dry and not re-prime itself.

the inside the overflow box is an extension of the pipe so the impeller is always under water. I have yet to test it, that will have to wait till next weekend. The only thing that i fear is if the power filter dies that the top tank will over flow, i'm thinking maybe a float switch on the main tank and the pump in the bottom tank to keep bottom pump from running dry.
