What is the lifespan of these two? And also, I have heard a high number of armatus tend to suddenly die with no known cause after their first 1-2 years. Will this happen to GATF?

scombs are the ones known to die in the first one or two years. Of course, no matter how mighty an armatus or ATF is they will die from bad care. So far, i've seen some nice armatus and ATFs that have lived 6+ years with no problem.

This is hard to judge in the few circumstances that have appeared but Ive seen and heard of many Armatus living past the 4-5 year mark. Alot of things are placed on diet, tank size, water parameters and the sort, so we cant falsely accuse the fish for the problems people are having. There are no reported random deaths of ATF that Ive seen, except fish that have jumped to their deaths from tanks without secure lids. Also a recommended minimum tank Size for either of these fish would be a 300+ Gallon Tank with a footprint of 6+ feet long and 3+ feet wide. As I currently own both of these beautiful creatures and seen their growth rate and swimming requirements, they are not a fish for the unprepared. Hope I answered your question. Goodluck!

Great answer.

Great answer, Sean.

To further caveat onto that, assuming the fish's needs are met, there is no reason why an ATF cannot live 20 years or more in captivity. These are long lived fish in the wild and the majority of the deaths in an aquarium setting are caused by the human who is keeping them.

I am not as well versed on the natural history of a payara, but I see no reason why a well cared for fish in captivity cannot live to ten years or more. They very well may be a long lived species like ATF.

Armatus hit 10+ years in the wild. Theres no reason why someone couldnt keep one that long as long as the proper requirements are met.
