I need some help with a biology project ideas.

I go to a marine biology academy and all the freshman have to do a research project. We get to choose any topic we want, as long as it relates to science and can be researched. So I'd like to do something about either snakes or painted turtles.

Most projects relating to animals are direct experiments. However, I'm not sure what I can do in the span of one semester. Everyone does the feeding patterns of this animal or that, so i wanna do something different.

If I do anything with turtles, my main test subject will be my pet juvenile turtle so obviously, they must be conducted on LIVE animals without inducing harm. If I do something on snakes, well I don't have any of my own so I'd need recommendations for anywhere I can work with them.

Thanks in advance.

if you lived in cali you could do a thing on how all the kingsnakes are disappearing.

You could study the efects of sun ligth and artificial ligth in turts;) You get a group of baby turts, and you raise them on the same diet, housing ,temps ,etc but on diferent ligth sorces. Some on sun ligth in a outdoor habitat, some with diferent levels of uv ligth and some with no uv and then by the end you see how much each group has grown:D

i like that idea

Im in New Jersey, unfortunately. And coura, that's an awesome idea, but i dont have access to hatchlings, nor do i have the accommodations for them. i have my turt, a hermit crab, and a fishtank and i have one extra 10 gal tank.

Plus i dont think i have the experience for hatchlings

Yearlings then:D Also you could adapt this experiment to any herp you want:) well and what about a breeding experience? You could try to bred one of thouse widely avaible herps but one that is not bred by entusiasts very often;) You need a small, sheap, hardy and easy to take care for herp but one that is not very usual. Well look no furder:D I think dwarf african clawed frogs would be great for that experiment, wount take much space and once your don, youll have a breeding group of this guys wich isnt very usual. Fire belly newts would also be great but they take much more time to condicion into breeding condicion specialy considering the body shape they are often selled:(

Def. a turt, hatchlings need no real experience, also you can order hatchlings of kingsnake.com

Well they can be more hard to look after than adult turts. Also when is don, if he´s restricted in space what is he going to do with a hand full of turts:nilly:

-sigh- I'm a girl. Strange how everyone thinks im a guy cuz i like this **** XD

Coura, that's actually a very good idea. Although, frogs don't exactly interest me much, but perhaps a cheap lizard. Anoles, maybe. thank you very much!
