The Buetti that climbed out of my tank had a stomach bulge since purchase. I thought this might have been a big meal at first but it seems that was not the case. The bulge stayed in the same location and the same size the entire time. When I moved the Buettis and the Del to the 40 breeder I took this opportunity to palpate for a hard object but none was found. When I found the Buetti it must have just died as there was no stiffness. I even attempted to revive in water but no signs of life. There was no external damage. I had to leave for work so I placed it in a bucket of tank water just in case it was in a form of suspended animation due to the cold from the window it had crawled to.

When I returned home it was floating....So I decided to try and find out what the bulge was after all.

Last warning dead and dissected pics below........

The wound in the chest area was not there when I placed it in the bucket. I think this was caused by gas expansion.

A better shot of the bulge.

After first incisions. Just some fluid similar to real thin cooking oil. One can see some of it still on the body.

Still searching for an object.

Unsure if the yellow is organ material or fatty deposits.

Was hoping someone with a greater Biological background than myself (not hard to beat) might be able to shed some light or possibly learn something from this tragedy. You can go to my gallery and look at the necropsy folder to enlarge the pics. Just be sure to sort by file name to get them in the proper order.

Remember keep those lids sealed!!!!!!

That would mean you have no more Buettikoferi since your profile listed as X 1. I'm curious about this myself too because I have a senegalus with a minor stomach bulge. Based on what I could remember from Biology class the yellow stuff is most likely to be lipids aka fats. Do you feed your bichirs a lot of fast food such as Mc Donalds and Burger King?:D

Nope still got one Buetti the one in this post is the one at the bottom of my sig... It would seem kind of odd for it to be fat as it was normally proportioned if not on the smaller side. I do not think it was hindering it's life in any way as it swam normally and was pretty active.

Its bile. digested goodies.

The fluid that came out of the incisions or the yellow deposits? The yellow deposits did not seem to be contained inside of any organs. There were some through out the body cavity.

Will try to zoom in on the original at home later.

Hmmm, reading that other article, it looks like a tumor. If the mass was in his the bladder, I would say maybe he had a urinary infection where he could not excrete his wastes, but since the mass was not in any organ, I'd go with the tumor theory.

the only thing in the bulge was a tan fluid not the yellow semi-solid stuff. That was spread through out the body cavity not localized in one area. If you look at the first pic in the last group I posted. That blob of stuff below the incision to left of the M in the watermark is the fluid I am talking about.
