Exposed Torn Gill...my mud sunfish has ...

part of his gill expossed from underneath his opercullum. It looks torn and is exposed underneath his chin. I don't know if this was caused by another fish, agressive feeding, or some other reason, but it hangs out about a good quarter inch. He has been breathing a little more forcefully white at rest, but nothing out of the ordinary.It still eats, swims, and acts fine. Should i just let it be, and let the torn part heal or die and fall off, or should i try to surgically remove it?
This also leads to other questions, would the damage gills grow back?

If it doesn't would he be fine with one and a half gills? I am more worried of it getting infected.
