So I have a wonderful 200 litre tank which currently has a Fluval 306 running as an external. I've come to realise I need to up grade this in the next couple of months and transfer my cycled medium over as my end stocking levels are going to have messy fish (i.e. puffs and plecs). Of course water changes are key to pristine water but having a good filter and turnover then I currently have won't harm.

I've seen some brands etc and would love to hear your thoughts or experiences. Eheim I didn't get on with back in the day so I've put this brand aside for the minute.

Here are some I have seen:-

Fluval Fx4 or FX6 - £190-£240 respectively in my country. How user friendly and easy are these? I like the design of the Fluval 306 I have and these Fxs look the business but unsure if overkill or not?

G3/G6 Fluval - £350 - I am thinking these are gadgety and expensive for what they are?

Oase Biomaster 600 - around £220 - I see they do the thermo versions as well which seems like a good place for a thermometer. An unknown brand to me - any experiences?

Any others? Or out of those above are they much of a muchness if I go for one that can go on say a 400-600 litre tank?

Personally I would go for Eheim. They have never gone wrong for me, i still have a 15+ year old Eheim 2217 running on one of my small tanks! I have always had issues with Fluval so I would never buy this brand again!

I had fluval for years and am glad I finally switched to Eheim a while ago. If you do go Eheim, look at the classic 250 (2213). Comes without media so it's cheaper and you obviously still have media from your existing tank.
