I have two Fluval FX5's that I have been told do ditch if converting my 135 gallon tankto marines. Is this sound advice? I have been told simply to buy live rock (20% of the tank volume) and buy two strong powerheads for current (10x + tank volume) and add a protein skimmer...
Sound or poor advice?

good advice.

if you run the mechanical filters... you better clean it out very often or it will just build up and become a nitrate factory.

1lb of live rock per gallon is the general rule of thumb. invest in a very good skimmer and you wont regret it.

how about a sump or fuge system?

Everything sounds good. I would spend a Few bucks and buy a HOB overflow and run a sump. You don't need the 2 canister filters with a salt system. The only reason you would is to run carbon through it. But then you would want to clean it every 2 weeks. Good luck

as long as its not a reef you could run an aqua clear because its got bio mech and chem filtration and run a nice u.v. sterilizer and use 2 pounds of live rock per gallon thatll help tons with filtration. a skimmer would help alot to, but with the rest of that you could get away with one thats meant for a smaller tank. but as far as powerheads you really wont need much unless its going to be a reef cause itll help feed filter feeders.

i have a 38 gallon reef tank and all i have on it is a protien skimmer, power head and a magnum 350 that i took the carbon out and put bio balls and a surface skimmer and i have gone months with out cleanin the filter and my nitrates are very low...i have never had a problem..my tank is actually doin better than the 75 gallon reef tank that has a huge protien skimmer and a huge sump....

Keep those filters those filters are very high in quality. I use a fluval 305 0n my 29 gallon tank. The FX5 is the highest graded fluval and pumps alot of water each hour. Just invest in some powerheads and a sup or high quality skimmer
