A.Many fish species are hatched/born complete for lack of a better term.Polypterids when hatched are not complete and go thru a larval stage like frogs strange connection but hey. When newly hatched the fry are still developing while you can see the mouth its not functional for the first 18-20 hours after hatching so the pinnate external gills allow for respiration.or the first few days after hatching the fry pretty much lay in one spot feeding off a yolk sack as they finish developing this lasts 6-7 days after which you have a developed baby Polypterid2.what are they for?
A.As water passes over and thru the external(pinnate gills) oxygen is extracted from the water colum
3.why do they come and go?
Genetics, water conditions are a couple of theories other theories include the gill function and lung functions are not developed enough to provide sufficient O2 yet-Anne

good if you like the looks of them

they looked like a dreadlocked freak:headbang2 or maybe that alien from the movie predator:headbang2

I can't understand:confused: so which means that your fish is good condition? no external gills or with the gills? or its just the same thing?Does this mean that the fish is just evolving/adapting unto it's environment?

i keep reading people say that it means good water conditions if they grow them back
