when i bought my delhezi almost a week ago, he had a small trace of external gill left, i thought to myself, hey! thats pretty cool! today i took a close hard look at him, and realized that the external gills didnt go away like normal growing bichirs would, but instead, they have gotten longer and bushier!.....

has anyone had his happen before?

yup if your bichir is still a juvie then they have a good chance of regrowing their external gills which most likely got nipped or damage by other fish. on my dels i noticed they finally went away when they reach around 6-7".

mines getting close to 5 inches, and ive never seen external gills on a bichir this size on any species (except the enlicheri but i recall they are bred to do so)

and i think i heard of someones palmas polli having them at around 10-11", but maybe thats wrong. its perfectly fine, in fact that means your treating him well i think.

does it? i was afraid it meant the water conditions were bad and it needed more oxygen so the gills grew back.... lol the sucker hurt my feelings a bit there

wow i guess i should have done a search before i posted this thread, sorry guys!

thats good to know. My del is in the growout and he started getting externals back, and I remember it on this site before but I couldn't remember if it was bad (more gills to get more O2) Or good (gills are sensitive)
I am now feeling good about my water.
