Why do juvinile polypterus have external gills? What is their biological purpouse?

They use them like any gills....to breathe...

They have the ability to breathe atmospheric air so they can survive in oxygen-poor environments. The gills probably just help them get extra oxygen when young when they probably have a harder time getting to the surface to breathe

Thanks Andy for a good piece of information.

while your in the womb there is an imbilical cord. So essentailly you are water breating i suppose. darwinism i suppose

When they are still small their lungs are not very well develop that's why they have external gills. As the lungs start to develop more and more the external gills start to shrink and get absorb. Inside the eggs they are unable to go to the surface that's also why they have external gills.

Baby sharks that are actually inside the womb of the monther actually have external gills. Lungfish also have this.

Its for them to respire as the juveniles does not have their lungs fully developed yet, hence not having the ability to gulp atmospheric air.

Not even juveniles bichirs have external gills, even those mid sized ones have them. I have a weeksi which is still having small parts of its external gils. From what i remembered, people mentioned its due to good oxygenated water.
