Has anyone taken the casing off the laguna max flo returns pump and used it externally?.......couldnt find any info on the web.....didnt know if it has to be fully submered

Submersible pumps are water cooled, not only by the water that moves thru the volute, but the water surrounding the pump body, which has a much better cooling effect than air.
Most external pumps are able to use the water pumping thru, and the air surrounding it to keep from burning up.
Beside voiding the warranty, by removing the outside, although it might work for a while, I would imagine using it externally could significantly shorten its lifespan.
Even when my pumps have become partially submerged for a short time, due to some kind of sump/overflow type accident, I have felt they were close to burning out from the heat buildup.

When shopping around for pumps and reading reviews, the casing can be removed and be used for external use. YouTube it and you'll see lots of external uses.

Just so I understand the question?
When you say run externally, to me that means taking it out of the water, running only a water line in, and water line out, meaning the pump is sitting out side the water of the sump and/or tank.
Or do you mean, removing the outer filtration basket, but still keeping the actual pump, submerged?
This (taking the filtration basket off) I have done with Lagunas without a problem.

I have done this as well to run the water level lower and it's fine just as duanes duanes has stated. I also agree the pumps would not work externally for long. And by externally, I am referring to how a Reeflo pump would be externally mounted outside the water column of the sump.

One benefit to running dual 4280s submersed on my setup is the heat they produce work as heaters. Thus my heaters have to work much less saving on electricity.
