I have a 250g with a pretty heavy bio load and run three separate external filtration loops - to an inline sock filter with UV, an eheim 2262 cannister filter and a fluidized bed filter with purigen. On the sock filter and UV loop, I have a blueline 70 he pump rate 1750gph and 39ft max head. Somehow I got water into the motor casing and fried it - it think I didn't get the gasket set right. The casing isn't cracked so I can't see any other ways could have happened. The pump is mounted vertically on the cabinet wall in the garage so that the motor is the lowest point. I like the Pan World and Blueline (private label version of same) pumps and think they are quiet and good value at ~$300 but wondered if you thought I should consider any other kind.
I run a continuous drip at 300 gallons per week. My routine maintenance is basically just to swap the sock filter and make sure there's no algae. Takes about 15 minutes.

Some new Reeflo models can be found on eBay etc for $350. By far my favorite brand of pump. Energy efficient, rock solid, last forever. I won't run any other brand of external pump. I have three of their dart models (my favorite) and a couple hammerheads as well. Have a look into those you may find a new favorite brand

Thanks for info on reeflo. Will check them out more. They have nice flow rates but max head limits are lower. My external is in the garage and the head pressure is about 32' (I think). If I go with the blueline 100 hd I'll still get better than 15 gpm. The flow slows at the end of the week as the sock gets dirty. Are the reeflo pumps quiet?

Yes they are quiet. I've used them also. I have also used the ones you are talking about. I have had the blue lines fail on me. Reeflo never failed on me but are bigger then the others.
