Heavily planted tropical community and the top fin 60 hob filter that came with it is not keeping the water clear there are lots of brown stuff floating. I want clean water would a aquaclear 500 keep it clear or would a canister like a rena xp3 be better?

the ac 500's are supposed to be great mechanical filters, so to get rid of floating stuff it would be perfect and cost less than the xp3

those filters are on sale at petsmart online for such the good deal plus free shipping all summer

I live in Canada so I went to Detroit to pick up an ac 500 or an xp3, ac 500 prefferably. I've seen the prices online ac 500 $50, xp3 $99. I get in the store and the ac 500 is out of stock and the xp3 is $180. I asked one of the store employees about the price and said I had to bring in a printout of the page. I begged and she offered to get the store manager. Manager said the same thing so I begged again and she offered to ask the store director. No luck I have to come back and bring a print out. :hitting:

I would go with the AC500 I'm not impressed with my XP3 at all.

I'm satisfied with my XP3, and if you're using Co2, or plan to, a canister is the only route that is worth while. But a HOB AC500 or emporer 400 is deffinatly more suited for mechanical filtration.
