I couldn't get any reply in the breeding section so I will try here :). My Dimidiochromis compressiceps have spawned twice now, both time the female picked up the eggs into her mouth. And both times within 24hrs the eggs are gone....Is she eating them? What do I need to do to get some babies..? The first time I moved the female to a tank alone, but this time I left her in the main tank. She is not eating very much but here and there she will eat a few flakes. Is she able to eat a little bit with eggs in her mouth?

If she is not eating.. Does she possibly have eggs in her mouth?? Oops you stated she wasn't eating :D

IF there are eggs or even hatched fry she will likely not eat. It is also common to eat eggs for most cichlids first spawns.. Eventually they get the hang of it and start the attempt of raising fry.

Form what I know of local african keepers (Friends) Most spit their females around 21 days.. And the females I've seen the owners spit were quite skinny from not eating.

You probably already know that D. Comps. are Mouth brooders.

SO the female will pick up and care for the eggs Another way to try to get a batch is to make a tumbler and spit her after she pics the eggs up..

Also if the Male does not fertilize or get the chance to the female will eat the eggs.

what all is in the tank... also if females thinks it is not safe she will eat the eggs... It may take a few spawns before she holds to term. Also is the male courting and mating, or is she just laying eggs...

He was doing both. There is 2 female comps, 1 male comp, yellow lab, GT, Gold Sevrum, a Syndo (catfish), electric blue, Salvini and 1 other that I am spacing the name. None of the fish are very large other then the Comps and one other. And thanks Tongue ad Mike :) Is it possible for her to eat a little if she has eggs in her mouth? I'll get some pictures of what I have in there later. I have sectioned off a part where some eggs were left behind. Were they left behind for a reason, because i have a divider keeping them safe.

Here a few pics of what is in there.

I may be possible for her to eat a little. I have a female z-rock that will eat while she is holding, but she is pretty old and has held more times than I like to count. I have 2 female eye biters and 1 male. Mine both hold to full term every time which makes me mad, I end up with tons of fry that I can't get rid of. Just give her some time, she will figure it out and hold full term for you. In one of the pictures it looks like she might be holding but it's hard to tell. I might have missed it but what size of tank are they in, and how big are they?

Malawi females don't eat during the time they breed, the females can easily abstain from eating for 4 weeks.

I usually catch my female 2-2,5 weeks after she spawned, to let her loose her fry in another tank. I usually leave the haplochromis fish up to a month with her fry to recover and take care of them.

I don't strip fish as the offspring won't learn to care for their own offspring when the time comes for them to spawn. Usually the fish tend to be more healthy as well, as the female will spit out or swallow the fry that aren't developing well.
