thinking of gettin some. but the females i see allways look kinda plain. are these breeding colors? what can i expect?

Maybe the females you are seeing are small?
from my knowledge they do colour up alot more at breeding but in general the females are brightly coloured? İ think you've been seing Urophthalmus (mayan cichlid) ive kept a large 11" female and they arent particularly colourfull. these guys are Sold as Festæ or "red terror" all too often. a real festæ female would be brightly coloured.

yes most larger females end up resembling the one shown in the pic.

İ meant is the females you see dull, like the Mayan? the fish in the video is a nicely coloured female festæ

festaes are one of the meanest fish I have ever kept. I had a ten inch male that was beating the crap out of a 13 inch male managuense. I had to remove him from the tank.
