wow,I hope you're right about the species,but not about the sex! I usually work with africans,which are easy to tell the sex of, but these are difficult.Is it the anal fin?
it is most likely a female .It is hard to see but I believe the dorsal fin a round spot on it 90% of the time that mark indicates female.
First of all, this fish is incredibly low quality. Where to start? I'm assuming the incredibly dark coloration is due to stress, in which case it's normal, but if the fish is settled and looking like that.....I hope you didn't pay over 10 dollars, and even then you were taken for a ride.
The reason people do research when it comes to the keeping of horns, is because of how readily people who sell low quality ones will do whatever it takes to move the fish, and make their buck. They didn't breed it, they got it from a farm, all they care about is the transaction being finished. Most folks who are specifically after a male, and don't want to pay a high dollar for one that is grown out and already clearly showing that it's male, usually buy a group of fry and grow them out. It's that simple. There's plenty of reputable dudes and dudettes in the hobby, and the problem is typically people being too lazy to seek them out. Hit up Pokerholics on this site, his real name is Albert, and he won't do you wrong. He pretty much always has thai silk fry, and I'm sure he has plenty of other goodies available. On top of that, he is located in Cali, and ships, so if you're wary of buying from Asia, he's the man to go to.
The truth is, it's a bad fish, which is what you were coming here to find out. If you like the fish, that's fine, but when someone comes in here asking for an ID on strain and sex, there's no reason for their hand to be held, which is too often the response of plenty of people on this board. The truth hurts, and the truth is that it's female, its incredibly low quality in every way (it's shape makes me cringe, seriously), and you were had by someone. How was that not clear when he said "it's a regular flowerhorn"?
