I acquired two wild caught Rio Mag Umbees a little while back. Both specimens have been growing at nearly identical rates and are virtually the same size (Although one has a wider profile and is thicker). Initially i put them in the tank undivided and the beefier one nearly killed the other within an hour. Due to their similar sizes and aggression towards one another i figured they were the same sex (i assumed female). I've since had them divided in the tank and they have shown minimal interest in one another through the divider. About a week ago i pulled the divider. The fish immediately began showing a bit of interest in one another and no aggression what so ever. Today i did a 50% percent water change and the fish started showing what i believe is spawning behavior. I took a few videos to post for some feed back/opinions. Let me know what you think guys!!

Looks like spawning behavior to me. Keep up the clean water and keep updating!
Will do for sure! If these fish do turn out to be M and F.. Can anyone explain the similar growth rate? I've heard males double female in growth and size typically..

when i have grown Jags/Amphs out i have noticed that some times the biggest most aggressive fish are female to start with. then at about 5/6 inch the males catch up then over take them. imo males are slower to mature at the start

Awesome! These guys are both sitting around the 8-8.5" mark. The fish i presume is female (if they are a hetero pair.. lol) is the beefier, bigger profiled fish.
Anyone who has had a successful wild umbee spawn have any other tips to encourage them to spawn? I currently have the tank running at ~82F. Water changes are about 30% every 5 or 6 days.

I finally solved the question as to whether these two are a pair! I was surprised to find a couple hundred umbee eggs in the fish room today! Still can't wrap my head around these fish being male and female and having identical growth rates due to reading that umbee males grow almost twice as fast. My male isn't showing the impressive adult male umbee coloration just yet so maybe he's a late bloomer? Here's a little vid!

She will slow down now from using all her energy to spawn and lay eggs. This slows down males growth also but not nearly as much as females
