F1 Honduran Jag Sexing

This is my first time having the Honduran Jags - I am finding them more colorful and much more aggressive than the other ones. Can anyone sex these at this age? The first is 3" tops and chases the one in the 2nd pic 2.5" tops even though they are in a 300 with tons of hiding places - that makes me think they may both be males. But the first one has always been more golden and the second one has always had more purple, which makes me think the first could be a female. I know they are tough to sex at this age but would appreciate any input.

purple usually means Nicaraguan. It's to small to tell, but if u post pix again at 6-7" or so, be much easier. I got a 2 Hondurans and 2 Nicaraguans i'm still trying to sex. I had them for 9 months now, still not sure LOL They really stand out as they grow and it becomes much more obvious, until then, just like JDs, Jags are very tricky

2 males and 2 females will still combat each other regardless, it all depends......randomly.

OK thanks - I got them both from Dan at Cichlids of the Americas (pretty reliable) so I'm pretty sure that they are both Honduran - I'll post as they continue to grow.

oh ok.....I was told blue = Honduran, purple = Nicaraguan.

2 of mine have blue and 2 have purple

Yeah, they both have blue in their fins when the light catches in correctly - tough to catch on camera, but that you can definitely see

I believe both are female. I have photos of my F0 pair from an inch on if you want some comparison. I don't know about all locales in Honduras, but the fish from LaCieba in. The Rio Danto have blue...but it's along the spine in the males.

My first impression is also that are both females.
On another tangent.
The thing about trying to ID by color in any cichlid is very nebulous.
A cichlid that lives in a pond 50 feet from another pond, that may have been connected 100 or even 20 years ago, but not connected today, can have noticeable color variation pond to pond.
So trying to ID by country with color is often haphazard at best.
And especially if humans have altered the ecosystem.
Although managuense are endemic to Nicaragua and surrounding areas, they have been transplanted (because they are tasty) as far north as Mexico (and even Florida).
This means they could be interbreeding in Mexico with northern Parachromis species like freidrichsthali confusing things even more.
Here in Panama, peacock bass are found throughout Lake Gatun, stocked long ago by man. I doubt what species were brought was farthest thing from anyones mind, so the lines that separate true species may at this point be useless.

both look female ATM, but as stated, at 5 to 6" you will know for sure. And yes, females will pester females, males will pester males, and any other configuration you can think of.

This has been my experience as well. I also think you have females. I've had several from Dan and all mine have been as Mo described.

That is a reliable source IMO. Probably one of the most reliable you can find.
