I saw a picture of these guys a while back and have been wondering a lot about them. There is a little bit of info about them online but not a lot. When I have the tank space I plan to get 2-3 wild caught ones. I haven't asked my supplier if he can get them yet but I'm sure he can. If he cannot who would have these..? I'm also wondering if anybody on here has ever kept these, and which name do they go by now a days. Australoheros facetus, facetum, chanchito, or just chameleon cichlid..? Are these all even the same fish? While I was searching for the facetum I found a lot of information scrambled in about oblongum too. They seemed interesting and it looked like people were saying that it was a miniature version of the facetum, anybody keep those..?

you are refering to Australoheros facetus?

i have never owned nor seen any avalible personally.

I think, lol.. The stuff I read online about them makes it sound like theres a lot of people that have them and they wouldn't be too hard to find. But.. I've yet to see anybody else ever post anything about them and have yet to see them on anybodies stocklist.. Am I the only one who thinks they look awesome or are they just not available..?

for the people who have never seen one.

I seen some offered for sale many years ago (when they were simply cichlasome facetum)but not recently. Chameleon is just a common name given due to there extreme color changing .I never kept any but now my interest is raised as well. Let the hunt continue.

I would try to contact Jeff Rapps or one of the other guys who sell harder to find cichlids, maybe get some in for you. Ironically enough, this is a species I've wanted too

I have kept Australoheros Facetum and Cichlasoma Oblongum. I got both species of rapps years ago.
Sadly the Oblongum didnt last too long after import, but the Facetum or Chanchito is still doing well with a friend and has grown to 8"+. They are very greedy and stocky fish.
Here is a couple of pics of when i first got him.

Havnt seen them available in a long time now, but would definitely consider keeping them again.

I had them years ago. It's actually the first cichlid that was ever introduced into the hobby. It's relatively mild mannered with males getting about 8-9". One of their interesting and unique behaviors is that during breeding they hang their fry from the bottom of vegetation. Very cool and under rated fish.
