A friend told me that if you have a dark/black background on your tank your fh will lose color, is this true? If so, does the color of your gravel, rocks, and decor have an effect on it also? I recently bought a fh from the LPS and it showing alot of red. What would be the optimal background color combo. to bring out the max potential in my fish? I currently feed it Hickari cichlid gold, is that enough to really bring out the color? Also wondering if anyone can ID the type of fh I have? Thanks...

usually this is true for non faders... however my RD doesn't mind black background.

generally true. they will darken up to surroundings, to hide from predators

use blue background and red or rainbow gravel.. feed sumo red for the red color and kok ... could be zz or some type of kamfa (red dragonxparrot)
