is this true? I don't have much bd experience but from the ones I seen, only females show strong belly spotting and male barely shows any.

I do not think sex has nothing to do with belly spotting, I have seen both females and males with no belly spotting and others with amazing belly spotting sex I do not think plays any factor.

So Belly spotting is not always a determining factor for BDs. I was always led to believe that
Perimeter spotting and Bellyspotting were major factors in determining BD. If not what
exactly is the determining factor. I also heard that blue tint in eyes was also a factor.
Is it just collection locale?

Belly spotting is completely variable I have stellar BDs with and without belly spotting. There is no belly spotting preference to males or females. Blue eyes are a myth. (on all of the internet show me an un-alterd photo of a blue-eyed BD. Organized and intense spotting is the main factor..more, larger, and whiter spots is indicative of higher quality BDs. Personal preference I like a lot of spots around the edges.

I don't debate anything you or Mike have stated, I just ask because I read people who say
they have to have this or that. I have seen Black Rays with only two outer rings called BDs.
So I just wanted to know if there was a definitive criteria.
As for as having blue eyes I have a BD/Leo that has blue tinting under the eyes which I
have read and seen on other pics of black rays.
Here is a pic, Unaltered or edited by any means other than reducing the size. It maintains
this same blue coloring in real life so it isn't the camera or lighting as I have tried several different
fluorescent bulbs.

Shadow,

Sorry if I came off as critical (I was posting from my phone so I didn't elaborate). I think there can be a blue tint/hue but it has a lot to due with the lighting (any visible color anywhere has something to do with the lighting) I have seen some people/vendors (monsterrays inc.) photoshop solid blue eyes on BD's...this is total BS. The best BD's in world have brown/white/drk brown modeling of the eyes as it looks like your's does, but the hint/tint/hue of blue is not a determining characteristic to me or breeders that I have talked with. It is nice to have it and you have a stunner, but I don't think it determines BD/not BD.

Overall, I think there is a lot of variability in the quality of BD's - that may be where some of the gray area comes in. From straight classic Leo to AAA++++ BD is just a spectrum of quality and the arguments will continue, but fortunately each ray is different and it leaves it up to personal preference.

No offense, like I said I was just trying to find out if their was a definitive criteria. As in
all rays people like to come up with their own names, own criteria all in the name of increasing
the value of their ray or to claim that their ray is better.....blah blah blah.;)
If it is appealing to the owner then who cares what others believe.:screwy:

So are black diamonds only from a certain area? Before BD's were in high demand, every so often a BD contaminant would come in with a reg. leo shipment. I wonder how this happens if they are only from a Sao Felix or wherever. For instance this fish was only $275 back in the days. God knows what it would cost today lol.
