Hey everyone, new here. I am also on another forum, but they don't know a whole lot on the bigger fish, and I found you guys thru Google and thought I would ask you instead since you have exp with the big fish! I finally decided to stop "prowling" this site and just join lol. :nilly:
I got my BGK about 7-8 weeks ago when he was about 4 inches and is now closer to 7 inches. He is in a 75G tank with one Red Dwarf Gourami who is his new best friend (moved because he was being picked on in the other tank). When I got him he had a deformed pectoral fin, which does not hinder him one bit. He still zips around his tank like a crazy man when it's feeding time. He could just be showing off for his friend and me too lol. I feed him by hand, along with the DG and all of my bettas. He is out at all times of the day, the light doesn't bother him anymore unless it's REALLY bright. Instead of having tank lights, I just got a desk lamp with a plant light which shines on 1/4 of the tank only over the plants that have to have some sort of light, the rest get natural sunlight. He pretty much avoids that lighted area altogether, unless he smells some food over there. He has 2 tubes, a "man castle" a rock hut and plants that he has started using as his Lazy-Boy chair, I find him sleeping upside down with his head on the leaves haha, his favorite place to hang out though is the bottom of the filter intake looking for bloodworms that might be stuck on it. He gets fed frozen BW's the occasional B. Shrimp (he doesn't like them too much), freeze dried BW and brine and sometimes he eats the tropical flakes I put in for the DG. All my fish get boiled peas on Thursday afternoon. I also give them kelp flakes sometimes too.
Anyway, my question is this:
I noticed today that about halfway down his body, he is starting to look a little faded. It is not "3-D" at all, just seems like his skin is lightening up. It is uniform on both sides. I know it is not that he is losing his color because the lights are off, as they had been on for about 7 hours. The only thing that has changed is I put one plant in there from a tank I am treating for a fungus with Melafix so the plant didn't die. I rinsed the plant off in hot hot water for a minute or so before I put it in there, and also put the other plants in my betta tank. My BGK is the only one showing these signs of fading and I am HOPING that I was not an idiot and transferred the fungus to his tank too. I thought rinsing the plants in super hot water for a while would kill the fungus. As I said before, the white areas on his body are uniform on both sides and there is no fuzz or anything on them. The tank that is being treated for fungus also has 6 Kuhli Loaches in it who did not have any signs of the fungus or fading, only the Harlequin Rasbora's had the "fin rot."
If you guys and gals have ANY information that would help me, it would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks! :(

Do you test water quality? I ask because finrot is normally due to either keeping fish too cold or bad water quality. Obviously, the knife doesn't have finrot, but it made me wonder about whether you do test. If you do, could you provide the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. If you don't, you should either buy tests (a better route -- test whenever you want to) or at least get them tested at an LFS.

Also, a photo would do wonders here.

Are you keeping him in soft water (KH of zero, or near there)? What's the pH in that tank?

Temp is 79-80. pH is 7.6. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5. I use an API Master liquid test kit and I just tested the water the day before yesterday. I have a Visi-Therm Stealth Heater on each side of the tank so the temp is evenly distributed. I use Seachem's Prime to treat the water. I don't know what the kH is, I don't think I have a test for that. I do have some strips that I never use, and they might test for kH, not sure.
He is a VERY had character to get a clear picture of, as when he is not sleeping, he is busy rearranging furniture and zooming around the tank. When I get home from work tomorrow morning, I will try and get a pic.

Okay, the water parameters sound great. I ask about KH only because when I was keeping fancy goldfish in soft water, back when I kept them and didn't yet know how to raise pH and KH (so much to learn LOL) I noticed that a lot of the color (for instance I had a bright orange one with a lot of black, and he lost the black altogether) would fade from what I saw at the store. I think the soft water was to blame. So, I was thinking that if he's in hard water, and he's a soft water fish, this could cause discoloration, as well.

It sounds like he's photo-shy LOL if you can get a pic, it would be great.

Hmmm, no other ideas on what could cause it? He has been in the same water for 7-8 weeks and had his new tankmate for 2. I always use the same tap water to fill the tanks, so nothing new there. I REALLY hope it is not something serious because he is my FAVORITE fish and he is SOOO friendly! I love him to pieces and will do anything to help him. I am hoping when I get home it will be gone.....

Anyone?

Ok, so I wasn't able to get the best pics in the world, but this is as good as I could get. You can see the fading the best in the 1st pic. Halfway-ish down his body.

Here are a few more. As you can see, his undulating fin looks good. It's the fading sides I am worried about. Thanks!

Nobody?

I've had the same problem... just my BGK lived for a few more years... This is interesting...
