So a friend of mine has an oscar. I went to the store to buy it with him. At the time of purchase, the oscar was pretty dark with nice red streaks (tiger oscar). After moving into his tank, the oscar has faded a lot. He looks almost like an albino with just a hint of black in his fins. The substrate is sand and I initially thought this was from stress. However, whenever a hand is put into the tank, the oscar turns dark for a few seconds before fading back to its pale mode. Any possible reasons why? I can try to get pics tomorrow.

How long has it been in the tank, what tankmates, is it eating?

Not sure how territorial Oscars can be, but stress from a move and the need to reestablish a safe zone/territory in the new tank can sometimes take weeks after the introduction. Oscars are also renowned for their sulking.

If he was vividly coloured in the store, your water conditions are good, and he's on a good varied diet, he will return to that state, just give him time.

Oscars fade & darken with mood. If he is acting normal then I wouldn't worry about it.

:iagree: with everyone my oscar only sulked for 2 days it was only 2 days since he was by himself he is great now and eating well they are great pets once they get used to there new tank.
I handfeed but he won't jump for the food he just looks at the food then me then the food so my oscar is not a jumper which in a way is a goodthing but yer anyway what everyone one said they always sulk and they will never stop like whn you cahnge there tank setup or clean the tank they sulk for a little bit.

they also fade and darken when they grow fast,, and they grow fast(in a big tank)
if u got them in a real small tank 75 gall or less,,then it can be stress,,because oscars need their space

He's acting normally- chasing the pim cat out of his territory and eating regularly apparently. He only turns dark when stressed, it seems, which is contrary to what happens in most other fish. Odd?

Does his Oscar look like mine? Mine gets stressed everytime I turn on the lights and it usually takes him about 15-20min to get back to his normal color. Otherwise, hes always hungry, like most oscars, and rushes up to the front of the tank when he sees you comming. Here's a picture I took of my oscar one night right after I turned on the lights.

A 75 gallon is fine for an Oscar.
