quick question...on average, about how long do you let your fahaka keep feeding before removing any remains that are left? I fed it muscle in a shell and it seems to be housing it like as if it were its fryLOL. It would keep blowing a sand pit for it(possibly mounting it for better stability when it goes at it?) and then proceed to go at it again...swim away and swim back and repeat...

The great thing about puffers is you can see when they are full.

If hes got a big belly than its okay to remove it.

As time goes on you will see how much he eats and can porportion his food out so there wont be anything left to fish out.

true...but is it normal for it to exhibit such playful behavior when feeding? i notice alot of sand blowing going on and it tends to sweep the food near it with its fins...real messy but I heard that they are real messy eaters...my fahaka seems to be super lazy and will always take whats on the bottom instead of swimming around and trying to catch the food(its tried but it hella funny when it goes to eat it and the current it creates blows the food away from it....anyone else on eating behaviors? my fahaka is young at about 3 inches or so...always hungry but so damn lazy at times(like right now its on the far end of the tank away from me laying on the sand watching "everybody loves raymond" with me)...he jus devoured almost an entire fat muscle on a half shell:D

mine plays with its food for awhile, when i feed it a feeder, it was kinda sadistic, it bit its eyes out and followed it around the tank for about 3 minutes then destroyed it, needless to say no more feeders.

wow i gotta try feeding a feeder someday...im not really too sure though because of the risk of disease transfer...also from observing swimming and eating patterns, I really dont think the fahaka is capable of catching a feeder if i were to leave it in the tank with it...i give my fahaka a little more growing and acclimation time before i think itll be able to do that...so lazy!:P

Fahakas are pretty quick. Normally very active. When mine was small he would keep chasing the feeder until it was tired and then eat it.

Truthfully I have never really seen a fahaka that wasnt always swimming about, especially at that size. What temp is your tank at?

The ultimate is when they get a rosy and eat everything but the head, which slowly floats to the bottom. Its so amesome! My gf hates it, but thats why they are so bad A.

My puffers eat worms, frozen krill, brine shrimp, clams on the half, crawdads, and ghost shrimp. The fahaka eats everything that moves inside the tank.

I have a 10 gallon set aside for feeders. When I get feeders I normally but them in there for a while and feed them heavy on veggies and other healthy stuff.
This lets me know there are no disease, and also gets them full of the nutrients I like my puffer (and others) to get that they dont freely eat.

Either way its only a matter of time before he becomes the JAWS of your collection.

not anymore, i had to fed all my puffs feeders at first and slowly get them on shrimp and bloodworms. i hate feeders, but sometimes you have to do it. i always Q-tank mine for at least a week.

and my fahaka can be rediculously fast when he wants to, that and he can hover right in front of a feeder.

Before you consider feeding feeders to any fish, read this:
Feeder Fish - The Pros and Cons

i feed mine once a week and the day after i feed um i scoop up watevas in the tank
Best to clean up the leftovers within 1/2 hour after eating.
