I am considering putting a fahaka (starting around 5") into my 90 by itself. It would live in my 90 for 2-3 more years before moving into a larger tank. What do you think? Is a 90 too small? How large would it grow from 5" in 2-3 years?

not exactly sure how large it would grow but I think it would be ok as long as it gets a bigger tank eventually... I say your looking at a close to full grown fish in 3 years(16")

Just so you know, a Fahaka eventually grows to 18inches and in the first year should grow to no less than 12inches... so if your only planning on upgrading after 2-3 years it may cause stunting in the fish...

So imo, i would hold off till you have the large tank for the fish, or when its closer to be setup rather than risk getting the fish, and then 2 years down the line have something happen and not be able to get the tank and have the fish suffer...

BTW, what are the dimensions on the tank... since thats going to be more of a deciding factor than anything...

How bout looking on craigslist for a 125, can probably find one for $100-125. Then worry about getting the right filtration(FX5 $200, or DIY sump) and build a stand on your own.

Or buy it and if you can't house it when the time comes sell or trade it off. That is what I did.

48 18... its a standard 90... So you're saying that if I decide to get a fahaka i should get it when it's around 3-4" and upgrade my tank in 2 years?

90 should be fine. They recommend 120 but the Fahaka shouldn't outgrow the depth of the tank and should be able to turn around comfortably.

The Fahaka grows super fast in the first year, 3-5" doesn't matter, it will be at least 12" by the end of the year. An inch per month? They MAX out at 18". I've seen quite a few max out at 14" range.

cool... So it's between green terrors and a fahaka for my 90 I think. I'm guessing there is no way they could live together.

Also, does the fahaka "require" a sand bottom? I hate sand =p.

well its my understanding that most if not all puffers that are fresh water are only freshwater when juvies to brackish and or full salt water at mature size as to the green terror thats a no the salinity in the water would kill him and or he would get nipped at so much by the puffer he would eventually die those puffers are mean lil guys and can be very aggressive especially with fish that have long flowing fins do some research on keeping brackish water fish and i think you'll change your mind on your selection of fish

Fahaka is full fresh, but like you said, there is a large chance the fahaka will kill the gt... just wondering it's even worth a try.

There is 99% chance the fahaka will kill any fish placed in the same tank with it. Nevermind that the fahaka will produce too much bioload for a 90g, so adding tank mates, is out of the question
