i am getting rid of my african cichlids and have decided to get a fahaka...i have a 240 gallon setup(96x24x24)...and I have a few questions for the experienced puffer keepers.

1) have you had sucess keeping tank mates with your fahaka? what tank mates?

2) is it better to get a small fahaka and raise it or get one thats medium or a full grown one?

3)is there a certain lighting i should use or would the 50/50 and 10k bulbs i used for my cichlids be okay?

4)is having alot of plants in the tank okay?

thanks....i will be ordering mine this week hopefully.

Ok from experience I don't think lighting matters unless you need it for your plants, tankmates no not really check out my thread about tankmates everyone told me the same thing although some have tankmates but always remember the fahaka is a really really aggressive puffer it might not do anything to the tankmates for a while but if the fahaka wants to kill it it will and out of nowhere too, I tried out tankmates last month I bought a tiger barb and it was ok for 2 days then I got another tiger barb and 5 neons,my puffer didnt bother them they swam by him around him even ate in front of him without my fAhaka trying to nip at them and next morning all missing :-O so that sure answered my question:(
For size I'd say get them as baby's :)
More fun and a great experience to watch them grow and you can say you had him that long my fahaka was about the size of a pea when I purchased him now he's 8 lol

I keep him in
Temp 80
Water change 25% per week
Feed crabs, worms, crayfish, mysis shrimp, market shrimp, frozen clams, krill, snails, diff variety of foods not the same ones
And ooh lots of love mines likes it wen I'm in front of his tank and watch him swim around for me and comes up so I can pet him :)

How big is his tank? I always recommend to do a minimum of 50% water changes.

I've no experience with a fahaka puffer fish, but a buddy had one and that thing was super aggressive. It pretty much damaged most of the larger cichlids that were kept in the same tank with him.. They are a really interesting fish.

I say get one as a baby and grow it out yourself... reason being if you get a semi-grown one you don't know if its been stunted or not... plus, watching them grow up is all part of the fun...

As for tank mates, really depends on your puffers personality... i'll say for the most part no you cannot keep tank mates with them, but i do some what believe, if you have their tank mates with them when they are small, there is a very slight chance they will be okay down the line... although still a very big gamble...

I personally have my fahaka in with a Albino Pleco and a Yellow Lab Cichlid both were in with my fahaka when she was very very young... although my yellow lab did get nipped once on the tail, and my Albino Pleco some times gets nipped when he pushes his luck with my fahaka... otherwise, normally every thing is okay, although i do have a lot of hiding spaces for all my fish...

Plants again will depend on the puffers personality... mine seems to leave most my anubias plants alone, but will at times up-root others or nip at certain leaves for no reason... so i just scratch it up to her wanting to have a say in how her tank is decorated...

Lastly as for water change, personally i do no less than about 50% once a week due to her feeding habbits... lots of seafood in her diet, so messes with water quality a bit so i tend to do more rather than less...
