Couldn't really find the info I'm looking for on the other threads. Have a few questions about these guys..

Would growth rate be affected at all growing a smaller one in a 55, and then transfering to a 135 for life? I already have both tanks, just need to use the 135 for awhile until I can get something else.. What is the growth rate like? I would transfer it far before it reaches the 1 foot mark.

As far as feeding, how should I know how much to feed it, will it stop on its own or over eat? Twice a day good? I know they need to eat shelled items, but do they actually eat the shell, or just use it to trim the beak? And can they eat live fish too? On the list I've got shrimp with the shells, qt'd feeders and crawfish, and snails.. Would this be good? What should they're staple be?

Decor. Do they prefer anything like a cave or hiding spot, or no? What do they seem to like?

Sensitive to water changes at all? With my cichlids I usually drain the tank about 80%, then fill up with water the same temp, and add dechlor. Could this method work for the Fahaka as well?

Lots of questions, but any time you guys can take would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Great articles answering many of your Qs, linked to there.

how big is it now? If it is still small so I think its best to feed them as much as you can and 2 times a day is good. I use to feed mine frozen prawn, do not defrost the prawn, depend on your fahaka size, cut the prawn enough for one feed then let it do the rest, it help with the beak when it chew on frozen prawn too. You need gravel and plant for it and yes it is very sensitive with water change so do it with care and never change more then 20%. If you it it hide in one spot or not eating then you know the water is getting dirty or something wrong with your water.

I agree except for the frozen food. Never, never feed your puffer unthawed food. It is horrible for their digestive system. If you want to keep their beak trimmed then feed shell food like clams, snails, crayfish etc. Please always dethaw your fish's food before feeding.

Actually, best to thaw in liquid fish vitamins.

Totally agree!

They like to cover themselves under the substrate, so sand would be advisable. Having some plants so it won't be bored would be ideal. But keep in mind, they will nip on your plant in search of snails. They won't touch anything at all...they won't re-decorate their tank(as far as my experience goes). Just re-model the tank around once in a while and it will keep it happy from browsing around. :D

Mine never buried himself, even with some sand in there. PITA to stir in a 125g tank.
