ladies and gents with fahahka experience need some assistance.

I have a 5 to 6 inch Fahaka i got about 3 to 4 weeks ago. .He is temperalty housed in my 20 gallon and will be moved to 75 soon. The question i have is the activity level of a fahaka. This guy just lays around all day long until i feed him then i see some activity. Are fahaka this unactive?

I have read all the of treads with fahaka to lear more about my baby but i really need to know if fahaka will be active only druing feeding or is this just a phase he is going through right now. I have reduced the feeding created hiding places, made sure the water chemistry is perfect and nothing seemed to work.

I'm planning on getting 125 or 150 gallon just for him but if he is not active then i will sell him and move on to another cool fish and work on getting my 240.

Let me be little more clear on my question. I know fahaka are visual hunters they do tend to be active diurnally, but well- or over-fed specimens will be less active.

I'm trying to find out the activity level, are they active like most fish( swim around looking for food al the time) or like other puffers that stealthy hunter so little activity is seen until food is introduced.

Mine does not move out of his little cave until i feed it, weather i feed him one time a day or one time a week. I never see him swiming around.

mine tends to spend half the day sitting and half the day cruising around. generaly whne i coem home i will see hitm sittign and then when he sees activiny he gets up and starts swimmign around. give them lot sof space, and thigns to swim around. and i foud mienwa smore active with dither fish in the tank. they have to be really quick though or they get eatin and give them ltos of hiding spots. right now i have giant daneos, a flying fox, soem tetras, and bushynose pelco, one got eatin. my fahaka's pretty nice though u might not have asmuch luck. cheers!

Although i don't own a fahaka personally, i think one of the reasons he could be acting this way is coz his tank is too small?, or possibly because you don't have complex enough environment for him to explore and hes bored?

Just my 0.2 cents...

Its true, environment is very important for Fahaka and the type of food you feed it too. When I first got my at 4" it just laying on the bottom corner and only move when it see the food. After I have it in 90G tank with gravel it start to bury in the gravel, so I put some plant and some rock in and guess what its start to active, swim around up and down and when it see me, it move move up for food. So now it eat more and always come up when I am around. Just be patient with it. So put some plant in for it.

Mine swims everywhere. As others have said complex environments help also spending a lot of time around the tank helps. I can pet mine and when ever he sees me he goes crazy. Great fish my 2 cents.

I moved some rocks around and added few live plants yesterday. Let see if that helps.

20 is little small but he was in 10 gallon when i bought him. Hopfully i can get the 75 ready for him soon. Thanks for all you help

I think the problem is the tank as well. Mine did the same thing when its tank sprung a leak and I had to move it to a 30g while resealing its 72g corner tank. Once I moved it back to the 72 it took a couple of weeks and it was back to swimming around most of the time. Know when ever I am in the room it is swimming at the top. Paceing all over as if it is begging for food.

He will get to be about a foot long. He needs to be in a heavily planted 75 gallon tank, and when you get that, use sand as the substrate. He will probably be better with more plant cover and more space. When are you going to get a bigger tank?
