So I have room for another larger tank in the house and want to do something non-cichlid. I have decided on a Fahaka Puffer so will start browsing for tanks. This is not something that will be done over night or within the next month as I want to do a custom 3d background on the Puffer tank. But I do want to start cruising through craigslist ads to see if I can't catch a good deal.

So, onto the question, I know the sticky says a 125g for an adult, which is a 72" x 18" tank, what is the general consensus on tank footprints for an adult? I mean would something like 48" x 24" work or even a 100g that's only 13" tall?

4ft x 2ft x 2ft is the general minimum. Footprint being the biggest concern. I also wonder about the more shallow height as well.

In all honesty, i don't even think they should be kept in a 125 for life... i have mine in a 200G and it seems to be about right, and shes only about 13 - 14" right now...

I mean if you consider when this fish is fully mature it will be around 18" or so, a 125 with 18" front to back doesn't leave much turning room for the fish, nor does the 4ft length really give the fish much swimming space... also, if your adding in a 3D background, that leaves even less turning room...

Just my 0.2 cents...

Makes great "cents." Haha. But what about the 120 with its 2ft wide footprint? That gives the fish a lot of extra room to turn around, however, I still think it deserves more than 4ft to swim down. Unluckily for me, the apartment I am in only allows up to 120 gallons, so thats where I will have to start until I move to a downstairs where weight doesnt matter, or I move to my own place where I can do what I want. Id like 6x2x2 for my fahaka when hes big.

Well, i mean depending on how long it is till you can get a larger tank, the 125 would still last a long while... coz also got to consider that its really only during the first year they grow to about 12" - 13", but after that they do slow down quite a bit it seems...

Although moving a large puffer may not be fun either...

agreed footprint is key. MY fahaka's tank is only around 110g but is 51x21x21(approx) and i hope to upgrade to a 200 or better for him one day
