I've had GSP's in the past and really loved them. The salt is what killed me. Not the work involed but the expense. I've been reaserching the fahaka and really think I'm gonna get one. I have a 120 with: 2 xp3's, a magnum 350(I use for mech. filtr), and an ac 110. Black sand and drift wood. Does this sound like a good setup?

I could not find info on life span. How long is the average? Also I realize they are very aggressive and do not tolerate tank mates. Has anyone had success with tankmates? If so what kind.

i have a fahaka w/ african knife. in 125 wide seems to be going well so far. also 3 tf barbs

From what I've read the Fahaka can live up to 10 years or so. I'd like to get one, but I already have two cks and when I get my 280, that's where they r going ;)

Fahakas are long lived. Don't expect them to live with a tank mate. Once they are a foot, it is usually just time until they kill the tankmate. Rarely though, you find a fahaka that will allow tankmates. If the cost of salt killed you, then a fahaka isn't for you. They often cost far more for food at 1', and get to be 1' in a year or so. They require some hard shelled food. My old fahaka went through $20-25 in food every week.

I'm ok with spending for food I just can't justify the price for salt. I'm sure the fahaka can't eat more than my 14 yo son. I can get crayfish, crabs and other shelled foods pretty cheap.

lol they are extremly aggressive towards tankmates...its a matter of time and the size the Fahaka gets that it will turn on the others in the tank.If you have anything like cichlids and arowana...they will all get nipped fins...the Fahaka from my experience once was that It nipped my Silver arowana, and managuense fins and pretty rouchened then up....but the thing is that the Fahaka puffer didnt not target the inner body or the face....just the tail and other fins. When they are larger like about a foot long...thats about when they will destroy your fishes. That was my mistake when I had a Leakage on one of my tank...so the Fahaka puffer had a new occupants in the tank with him.=[ Dang tank had to bust on me at that time. But now since its been over 3 months since then....they healed all the way with nothing showing up like last time.As for feeding...crabs,shrimps with shells on,Crayfish,....Tank size is great as a minumum.

There is no reason that with proper food & housing, a fahaka shouldn't live into their teens. If you buy most of their food in the fish dept of your local grocery store, it shouldn't be too expensive to feed them.
