My sister is getting a fahaka puffer soon and just out of curiousity I started doing research on them. I am quite surprised and very intrigued on the amount of care they require. I was planning on redoing my 60 gallon tank but now Idk I might want to do something different with my 125 gallon instead. I just can't imagine getting bored with a fahaka puffer. I have a few questions. Is the fahaka puffer the only freshwater puffer available? How fast do they grow? Will one be able to live in a 125 gallon for its entire life? For the members that own one please tell me your opinion on fahaka puffers. I haven't been this interested in a fish in a while and I might be willing to rehome my red devil for a puffer. I just don't want to get one unless I know for sure that I can care for it properly. Who will make a better wet pet my red devil or a fahaka puffer?

As far as freshwater puffers there are others; but the others are either a good deal smaller or larger. Fahakas are a good size 12-14" usually max- sometimes up to 18". A 4x2x2 is usually the minimum recommended size. Really exciting fish; probably a lot better than a red devil in my opinion; nothing beats watching one chow down on live crayfish.

My husband think they are ugly. I think they are a really cool looking fish.

I have 6 growing in a divided 180, smalllest is 2" biggest is at 4.5 inch. eventually I will set up a 240 for a single fahaka. they each have their personalities and they love anything from pellets to snails and live common "lobsters" I don't do anything different from any of my other tanks, I just feed and do wc once a week. clean filters every 3 or 4 months. none have died thankfully.

The 18" width of your 125 is a bit of an issue, usually 24" wide is recommended. Like was mentioned a 120g (48x24 footprint) is minimum with a 180g (72x24 footprint) being more desirable. These are big bodied fish that make a ton of waste so good filtration is also required with a good water change routine. This is one of my dream fish but as of now my 210g has a nice community of cichlids so no change in the near future. I did want a puffer but went with a small lurker type instead. The hairy puffer I have is a lot of fun but does not need a large tank, he is in a 40B.

Oh... Well I guess a fahaka is out of the question. I refuse to get a bigger tank!
