Both depending on how you go about it.

I think certain fake plants look great.

X2, i've seen some fake planted tanks that unless you are right infront of it, would make you think they were real plants inside...

The el cheapo Wally World fake plants look terrible IMO, but the quality primo fake plants look awesome. As with everything else in this hobby, if you want it to look good all you have to do is throw money at it. lol.

Michaels the craft store has some cool fake plants

What brand or website would you recommend purchasing from?

Honestly I don't have anything that I favor. My LFS has some reptile plants that look really nice that I've used for a while though. To be honest, I'm not really a big aquascaper. I haven't bought too many because with all the tanks I've had until I finally set up my 510 I've been more concerned about preserving swimming space that I was about making it pretty. I do know I've seen some really realistic plastic plants but they were NOT cheap lol

you get what you pay for. Ive had fake plant tanks that looked amazing. Ive also had fake plant tanks that looked terrible. IMO, fake plants are best used as an accent to a hardscape. I often utilize fake plants around caves or emerging from behind rocks or driftwood. I think fake plants on their own in the open look more fake
