Been away from the board for a while. My son turned 8 months old today. Hard enough taking care of him, my tanks, my house, my dog, oh yeah, and my wife and post here.

So I have this 55 gallon in my office. I was using it to raise Zebra Obliquidens and J. Transcriptus. That went over pretty well for the ZO's. TRanscriptus dont grow at near the rate of the ZO's and became feeders for the ZO's.

Not wanting to obliterate my aqua scaping in my 110 every time my female ZO was holding I just left the 55 empty after I sold the babies. Getting sick of looking at a bare bottom tank I decided to do somthing with it. My son LOVES my 110. So I was thinking of something to do that would be colorful with a lot of movement and cheap.

So I bought 40 pounds of black sand, 3 albino cories, 3 green cories, 4 C.Arcuatus, two albino bristlenose, 1 gold striped panaque (that's what it said at the store, I'll try to find an L number later) and a lion head goldfish. Other than the panaque, nothing cost me more than $6.

So I have satisfied my colorful, movement and cheap requirements for the most part. Really not much in the tank right now. A little root wood, couple rocks, a piece of slate and some flower pots.

For filtration I have two sponge filters and an Aqua Clear 30 that I dug out of a box of various tank supplies in my garage. I need a cannister for this guy. Any suggestions for one on the cheap? I have a Filstar on my 110 and on my 75. But they have shot up in price. With the holidays, I don't really want to have to drop $120 on a canister. Any good ideas for this tank in terms of a canister?

My plan is to add 4-5 more fancy goldfish. A ryukin or two, a black moor, maybe a calico. I'm going for low maintenance by under stocking big time and with a large cleaner crew to work on the stray bits of food that goldfish invariably spew everywhere...

Any other advice for a guy that hasn't done fancy goldfish in 20 years?

Get a bunch of Lionheads.....These are fancies that look just like Orandas but have no dorsal fins...Actually, the lionhead is the most popular fancy goldfish purchased in most of my stores.....That 40g will be fine with two HOB's for mechanical, and a small canister for biological......I would keep decoration down to most least to none.....Goldfish secretion is like Oscar poo......Throw in some dojo loaches for some bottom clean up.....

I keep Fancy Goldfish along with tropicals in my 135 community tank. I have a tricolor, and a chocolate, and two red/white Orandas. I also have a Black Moor and a Lionhead. I agree with Importracer, I really like my Lionhead.

One thing is for sure, they eat and poop a lot! Don't underestimate the amount of mechanical and biological filtration you'll need. Their constant sifting of the substrate also contributes a lot of cloudiness.

I would get a big canister filter. Whatever brand you choose, make sure it has convenient shutoffs/disconnects, as you will want to clean it often. I like the Eheim 2217, they run about $140.00, I believe.

I was planning on way understocking and going with a smaller filter. I think that may be a bad idea now that I have heard from a couple people here. I'm getting flashbacks to 1988 and constantly cleaning underpowered filters.

Looks like I gotta go with a more expensive filter. That will have to wait till after the first of the year, but considering I have a power filter and two sponge filters on a 55 with a single Oranda, 10 cories and 3 very small plecos I think I will be OK for a while.

I doubt I go with a separate power filter on the back. I love having a single filter per tank to clean so I will buy a filter a little too big for a tank rather than two smaller ones...

OH, and great pics...
