Hello,

I have 2 fancy goldfish, 1 Oranda and 1 Ryukin (I think) and they were tank buds in a smaller tank for about a year. Just recently I put them both in my vacant 135g. My sister had purchased a black fancy goldfish (don't know what it is) from Walmart (yea i know) and then I noticed they all had white spots, so I started to treat with the liquid Ick stuff for the past 3 days and no imporvement. Well, I also noticed that his long time tank buddy has started to eat away at the Oranda's tails. He will follow him and eat away. I have him in a huge net right now, the Ryukin. Now, the other black fancy has started to do the same thing and the big Oranda started to get all red and stopped swimming, so I netted the other black fancy. Is this normal for the other tank mates to eat away at the biggest goldfish in the tank? Are they 'eating the white spot parasites' or trying to kill him. I'm confused, heh, and in need of some advice. Thanks!

Could you please post pics of the white spots? Are the spots all over the body? If you suspected ich, please use table salt only (with no yellow prussiate or ferrous cyanide added). Doesn't matter whether it is iodized or not as long as it does not contain yellow prussiate.

Once you have the salt, add a teaspoon per gallon (0.1%) of it to the tank. Be sure to dissolve the salt thoroughly before adding. It must be added every 12 hours until you reach a total of three teaspoons per gallon of salt or 0.3%. Do water changes every other day by as much as 40% and be sure to replace the amount of salt per water volume changed.

I do find your goldfish's cannibalistic habits intriguing and would like to know myself how this occurred. I've never had this occurred among my own goldfish. Are you sure the victim does not have any open wounds that could trigger the others to attack it? Keep the victim separated.

The white dots/specks are on the tail fins, body and top fins. The other fish no longer have the specs, but the Oranda still has just a few little left.

I need to go buy some table salt, but I did do a 50% water change. I did have rocks in the tank and noticed that some scales are missing and that his tail fin has veins showing, which i've never seen before. So, I'm assuming he was rubbing against the rocks pretty bad and took all the rocks out when I did the water change.

I also noticed this morning that one of my chinese algae eaters was also attacking him. I saw it from afar and it looked like he was sucking his body. Once I got closer the algae eater took off.

Here's the pic of the goldfish. He is also very bouyant. When ever he stops swimming he immediately floats to the top exposing just his top fin when up top. And the other goldfish aren't picking at him... yet, since I've let them out during the water change.

It's fine. Keep the water clean and add salt. That's all you need at the moment. Add a teaspoon per gallon of salt every 12 hours as instructed before.

I'd remove the Chinese algae eaters. They're totally incompatible with any goldfish regardless of variety.

Every 12 hours. Redose salt exactly per water volume changed every time you make a water change. Keep treatment for at least two weeks.

What do you feed your fish currently?

Have a read on this regarding floaty issues.

Ok. I have been feeding them the same food for over a year. TetraVeggie flakes. He just started floating when I noticed the white dots and torn fins. He does always do flips in the water, but he has always done that.

Quit the flakes and switch to sinking pellets (with not too much starch content). Perhaps give Hikari Lionhead a shot.

Ok, I'll look for low starch sinking pellets for them. I have been doing the salt/water changes and the other goldfish still nibble at his fins, shredding them more. I also took a look at that webpage about his floating and tried feeding just peas to help 'push' out any air or foods stuck in his system and still floating. I will try the next step, which is to make the gel food with the medicine metronidazole, but do not know where I can purchase it. Would a LFS have it?
