Hey everyone. I have a 168 gallon glass tank that I will stock with fancy goldfish. What would the best filter I can use for it? The HOB filters are easy to use but I also like canister filters. What brand would you recommend and why and what are the pros and cons? Thanks in advance, The Doctor

2x AC110 HOBs + the 1200lph/300gph+ canister of your choice.
AC110s are cheap, efficient, and very powerful, they move a lot of water.
You'd have a wide choice of canisters, depends on how much you'd want to spend. You'll probably have a lot of people recommend Eheims but they're out of my price range. I'd consider using an 1800lph Odyssea cfs 500 canister filter. Pretty cheap and the reviews I've read have been quite positive.
If it's lightly stocked you could forget the canister and just use a pair of AC110s.

Marineland C360 is good, but do not use the C220 as it had design flaws. I would suggest using a canister and a HOB bio-wheel.

I'm either thinking about 2 HOB 110's or a FX5. I wonder would the 2 HOB filters or the FX5 move too much water. Fancy goldfish aren't known to be strong swimmers. Any answers or suggestions? Maybe I can modify the filters some how. I was thinking I could attach a pvc pipe drilled with holes to the outlet hose of the FX5 and also attach a pvc pipe drilled with holes to the inlet hose so the goldfish won't get sucked into the inlet pipe.

Like you said, fancy goldfish are tricky because they produce a lot of waste but aren't the strongest swimmers. I'd go for a large canister with a spraybar output, something like an Eheim 2260, and maybe modify the spraybar to make it longer and disperse the flow over a larger area.

I would go with the 2 AC110's and a canister for biological filtration. You would be surprised how well fancy goldfish can swim and like to play in the outflow of filters. The only goldfish in my experience that have a hard time with to much current are celestial and bubble eyes.

Depending on the dimensions of your tank you could put the 2 AC110's on the two far corners so the goldfish can get away from the current if needed and put the return of the canister towards the middle of the tank. The benefit of having both types of filters is maintenance, you would clean the HOB filters more often to get rid of the majority of waste and the canister would serve as your polishing and bio filter.
