Fast Growers? (Fossochromis Rostratus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fossorochromis Rostratus can grow faster than the average cichlid indeed. Dut this is more die to their size they grow to. Allmost all large species grow faster than the smaller ones.

I have some Rostratus here that grew to 15-17cm (6-7") in just over a year

I was just wondering because he is one of the smaller cichlids right now and I don't want my Anagenys to eat him. So I just need a little growth for now. LOL

In any fish species there are a few factors concerning their growth: genes of course, food quality, space (as in tank space), and tankmates (directly responsible for the "stress level" in that setup) ...and yes, one of the most important factors: filtration :D

All these together will speed up/slow down the growth rate of a certain fish specie, or species. I'd like to know more about what setup are you putting them into, what are you feeding them and what is your water change regime. All that will result in, as mentioned above, accelerated growth ...or not.

I have a 75 gal. right now. I have 2 Emperor 400's on it and do 30% water changes every 2 weeks. The Fossochromis is just under 2 inches. I feed Omega One pellets, Flake Spirolina, and some smaller variety pellets I ordered from Bluegrass Aquatics, I think it's called Red Zebra.

If you want him to grow youll want to feed 3 times a day and compensate with 50% WC's twice a week. He'll catch up in no time.

And there's the recipe for destruction. Some pellets, like NLS, or most of the 40% protein ones, are so dense with nutrients that ONE meal a day is more than enough for the fish to be healthy and grow nicely.

The water changes are not enough (30% every two weeks), I do 80% weekly and I have way more filtration than that.

Again, FEEDING FISH IS NOT LIKE FEEDING HUMANS. Space, filtration and water change schedules are just as important, or more important than the staple one uses. A pinch of pellets goes a long way.

As was said. I use NLS only for my hap tank and my south american tank. NLS is very dense and a little goes a long way. My 10 inch haps still eat the 1mm pellets with no promblem. My 90 which consists of 5-10 inch haps gets two teaspoon fuls a day and that is it. My fish have been fed this way for almost two years now with out any promblems or sickness and all are in perfect shape and color.
