Right now I have my juvenile common snapping in a 40 breeder(upgrading to a 100 gallon Stock tank soon) with a Eheim Ecco filter that tanks water from the tKes and then pumps it into a ten gallon above tank sump I guess you'd call it filled with lava rock and then goes down and over flow back into the tank.

My question is I'd like to put some fast growing plants that suck up a lot of nutrient in the sump to help with filtration. I was wonder what species would be best for the job. I was thinking along the lines of duckweed or hornwort but it'd be great if I could find a less messy plant. Any thoughts?

Hygrophila sp. You pretty much have to microwave it, pour bleach on it and set it on fire to kill it. Actually banned in some states for being a federal noxious weed. I think it's beautiful plant. Here's it is in my 57g. I had to trim it every 2 days otherwise it would take over.

What kind of lighting do you have available? Will it be able to go outside?

This summer a kept a tub pond without a filter. Instead, I just did a little research and put a buttload of plants in there which completely took care of filtration. Some of the best plants are hornwort, anacharis, (these grow easily) water lettuce and water hyacinth. If you really want to get good plant growth, you'll need sunlight or as strong of an artificial light as you can get your hands on. Stem plants tend to be the fastest growing. If your worried about filtration, its good to go with plants that are partially in the water and partially out with their roots in the water.

It will have what ever type of lighting that I'll provide as I haven't added any yet. I've also thought about using pothos ivy as I've heard it has good results. I just wanted to see though if there were any true aquatic plants that could do the jobs because once they start getting to large I could start tossing them in some on my other tanks.
