I had a thought today. Would it be advised to take some media from say a cylinder filter (that had already been cycled) and put it in a newly set up aquarium so that the good bacteria that was already growing on the cylinder media would populate the new fish filter?

x2 when setting up a new tank i always saved the biological filter media and some of the water to add to the new tank.

i have always liked SafeStart from Marineland It's the only one ive found not to safe Works in both saltwater and fresh which is impossible to completely different types of bacteria

Stay away from Cycle,Stress Zyme that crap says both saltwater and fresh.

I even went as far as testing the water for salt in a Refracto meter used to measure salt levels it contained 0ppm of salt Meaning the salt water bacteria is BOGUS

When setting up a new tank I usually take a big nylon bag and fill it with gravel from an established tank. Toss it into the new tank right below the new tank's filter intake. Once a week for the first few weeks I remove the nylon bag, dump the gravel back into the tank it came from, and fill up another bag.

Has never failed me. About as close to instant cycling as possible IME.

I definitely agree with those who state that the bacteria products are a complete waste of time and money.

I just cycled a new tank with fish in eight days using Seachem Stability.
I would think that using some filter media from existing tank in addition to the bottled bacteria wold be the best way to go.
