Just yesterday I lost my favorite fish, an 11" shubunkin that I'd raised since she was 2 inches long and transported from Central NY to Boston. It was a very mysterious death - the night before she was perfectly healthy, splashing water out of the tank in her eagerness to eat. The next morning she was floating upsidedown in the corner of the tank.

The thing is, she was super fat. She was the biggest fish in the tank and would swallow whole veggie wafers 3 at a time. The only two things I could think of that killed her are 1. bloat (twisting of the stomach, similar to what happens to some dogs), or a heart attack or other fat-related illness.

Does anyone have experience with fish dying from obesity-related causes??

Tank params are all fine, there was no visible sign of any illness or injury, and all the other fish seem great (including the corys and Denison's barbs, which ime would have been the first to go if it was a water quality of disease issue).

I better watch then... my fish are getting awfully plump bellies.

Ive got a fat shubunkin that keeps flipping on its back for days at a time. Im treating it as swim bladder infection so shes in a hospital tank getting dosed. I usually just leave her be since the other fish are fine and water parameters good but I figure if I wipe out any bacteria this time maybe it wont come back. If its not bacterial I dont know what it is or what to do.

yes i think obesity would shorten the lifespan of the fish. the fat will wrap around their swim bladder which will greatly affect the movements of our pets which in turn will make the organ function harder. thats what i've read.

bumpies - anyone else have opions/experience? I'm just frustrated that I lost my favorite fish and have no discernible causes except for this one . . .

It could just be that she outgrew her organs. Fancy goldfish have a more compact body which leads to less room for the growth of organs.

I have lil fatty.. She a senegal.. Any ideas on how to get her to loose weight..?

Feed less frequently, skip a day every so often. In the wild, they don't get to eat on a daily basis.
