How fast do these guys grow? Currently have a 72"x20"x25" tank and in 2 years will be upgrading to at least 240 gallon that's 24" wide. I'm just wondering if a FATF could do in the 160g for 2 years - if it's a yes then I get to start doing research on tankmates! :nilly:

Two years in a 160, i assuming hes only a few inches? You'll have plenty of time to save for your upgrade. Im pretty sure fatf max out around 18".

fine for life. They mostly get 12 inches max.

You'll be fine. A half an inch a month will be good growth for these guys and once they get to about 10" they'll slow down after that. I would say they could live indefinitely in the 20" tank until you get the 240 going.

Thanks guys, that's very good to know. ATFs have been the fish that I have always had my eye on but thought my 160g was too small, and a year or so ago when I bought it I wasn't really looking at upgrades.

Little off topic, but would yellowtail barracudas be decent tankmates for a FATF? Been trying to do some MFK searching and it seems that they aren't all that widely kept.

They should be fine. Comparable growth rate, schooling, relatively non-aggressive, silvery; there's no real reason that they shouldn't work. The issue you're going to run into is that they're nearly impossible to break onto dead food and there have been ones that are such finicky eaters they've starved to death even on an exclusive diet of live. They're ambush predators who don't instinctively charge after prey like an ATF would do.

Yeah I read that about the yellowtail, I also read that the red tail are more aggressive eaters but do get smaller and in general are more aggressive then the yellows - which is why I was favoring yellows over red tails.

I'm super excited about my tank - haven't felt this kind of excitement since I bought my first over 55g tank.

So my stock will consist of 3 yellowtail barracudas (as I read they are less skittish in a group of at least three) and one FATF. That look like a nicely stocked tank?
