My Haplochromis ruby green is looking a little skinny and I figure could stand to gain a few fishy pounds. What are some good foods for them that will fatten them up but aren't unhealthy?

I'm feeding NLS, but he won't touch it once it hits the bottom. He grabs a few bites and ignores it (I can tell all the uneaten food on the white sand). He's not emaciated, just a little dull and skinny looking. I'm hoping that the new female juvies that I got him should help along with adding more hiding spaces.

If I were you, I would treat with aquarium salt and water changes, rather than wasting your time feeding the ruby green food that it won't take. This has happened to me with a nyererei I have had in the past and it worked for me. My nyererei took bites of food and spit them out, had a very sunken belly, and had dull colors, etc. Same symptoms your ruby greens is showing. Hope this helps.

Would I be treating that as if he has a parasite? He's still eating some, and I haven't seen him spit anything out.

Just watch out. If you suspect parasties, then I would treat immediately. I wouldn't want to lose a ruby green for they are such beauties.

I'm gonna step up my wc schedule, but I doubt its parasites. He's still eating, doesn't have funny poop, and isn't flashing.

Think of it like a tapeworm...if you had a tapeworm you would feel fine and still eat but you would lose weight. could be the same fish besides it cant hurt to treat him anyway.

ive had a few fish die with sunken bellies die before with no symptoms other than the skinny look. i had a mooriii that was eaten just fine but never seemed to gain weight, he died before i could even think it was parasites.
