kennesaw, ga
so i usually have my temp in my 55g set at 78-80F. last night everything was fine. today i went out early and came home around noon, turned on all the lights on my tanks and i noticed the temp in my 55g was 73.5F :WHOA: WTF, i was freaking out, all my fish seemed fine though and my water didnt feel that cold. i have an electric thremometer on the tank so i thought that might be the problem, but i checked on other tanks with stick on thermometers and it(the electric on) read the same as the stick on ones. i took the heater out and it was hot still. WTF is going on. i found an old heater and stuck it in also to help warm it back up. so now i have 2 200watt heaters in my 55g

its warming slowly back up now. they are marineland stealth heaters in the tank

I've had the electronic thermos go out of wack. I don't trust them any more. The old fashioned ones are more accurate and will stay accurate. Just make sure the fish can't break them. On my bigger tanks, I keep them in the overflows.

I know a heater I have is crap and wont stay within a 2 degree range.. I need to put another on because the temp needs to stay constant.

It could be other variables also, unless all your tanks are in the same room. Has the room temp lowered?

Heater may be losing its efficiency as others have stated.

the only other tank that is in the same room is a 10g, and the temperature, according to its thermometer, always stays constant. i guess ill stop at petsmart in a bit.

the heater is less than a year old also

Ya some are just poor heaters.. Who makes it? I like Jag or Stealth..

I prefer the digital thermometers, and have had no problems with them.
