Hey guys i was thinking about this recently and had a hard time deciding. I've always had Yellow perch and various minnows etc; until i recently acquired 3 Pumpkinseeds and a black crappie. Then i really realized how pretty, and how much character fish can get. My favorites so far are Pumpkinseeds (they are very colourful and are always active) and my small white sucker (he is very lazy but does alot of weird things like sit on the bottom on his fins) i know every fish can have a different personality but what are some of your favorites you have had and why?

My favorite minnow would be Blacknose Dace. They are active enough to make a tank come alive, but not hyper to the point I get dizzy watching them. They also come up and nibble at my hands during water changes. I love that. They are not the most colorful minnow out there, but I like more subtle fish. I also love the way their silver flashes in the light. I also really like Emerald Shiners.

My favorite small fish would be a Tessellated or Swamp Darter. They are so much fun to watch move around their tank and interact with each other. Plus, they are just so damn cute. LOL

My favorite larger fish would be a Green Sunfish. They have so much personality once they get acclimated to captive life, and will follow you around the sides tank when you walk by. If I stop and look at the tank, he is right there looking back at me. He is very sedate, and glides around his tank like he owns it (which he does). So far, he has not been nearly as aggressive as I was expecting, and is cohabiting with other greens and a smaller unknown sunfish. Plus, I like feeding him crickets and watching him slam the surface. I bet I could get him to jump out of the water for a worm. I'll have to try that.

I hate having to pick favorites like this! It's much harder than I thought.

My favorite native that i've kept would be a Green Sunfish too. As already stated, I like watching him hit the surface for a cricket, and they have great personality. My Green is more lazy, he won't jump for a worm, nor will he allow you to hand feed him. But, if you drop the food in normally, he takes it like he's never been fed before! He does cruise around the tank and is less aggressive because he doesn't attack any of my fish, since my other fish just keep to themselves. I also think that Greens look very pretty with their blueish pattern on their gill plate.

That would be the ALL AMERICAN Bowfin.

I don't know how to go about explaining the personality of my Bowfins. They are similiar to Oscars in that aspect. I love hand feeding these brutes. It is hard to believe that these gentle playful beautiful creatures are the APEX freshwater predator in the USA. It just breaks my heart that they are doomed to extinction from retarded polliticians making laws in the US FORCEING the citizens to exterminate a non-native species of fish that has a slightly similiar body shape as poor 150,000,000 old native Amia Calva and wacking a prehistoric native fish in the process.

You members on MFK here either have no concept of an idea of what the consensus thought of the "MAJORITY" of the USA Freshwater Large Mouth Bass fishermen thoughts are on protection of the whimpy large mouth bass that can not defend itself from a real predator fish, or are just ignorant and fully intend to stay that way! It is an EXTREME common belief with LMB fishermen that even if you can successfull differentiate the Bowfin from a Snakehead, that the bowfin should ALWAYS be culled in the same manner as the invasive.

No kidding. THE MAJORITY of LMB fishermen believe the Bowfin (Native to the waters of the USA for over 150,000,000 years) is a serious threat the the LMB population in the USA. The fact that even though the LMB is an infantile fish in comparison to the Bowfin and that no serious decline in population has occured in the first 2,000,000 year stint of the LMB can NEVER factor into the equation of (protecting their wittle game phish).

I am an avid fisherman and find myself embarised to admit it with the average IQ displayed by the ALL AMERICAN LMB fishermen.

I started out with a bluegill so thats my favorite. They would jump out of the tank to eat pelets of my hand realy, cool fish. right know i keep smaler fish and my favorite would be blackbanndeds less colorfull than bluesppots , but much more out going. Golden topminnows are cool too

yellow belly bullhead. they're just awesome and eat anything. true predators and dont require the space of a channel or flathead.

Central Mudminnow. All of the personality of a bowfin/pike, attractive colouration while staying at a small size.
