fbf sand

is there anything that can be used instead of the stuff marked "special sand"? or is there at least any stores that carry this stuff, like a pool store or something?...it's proving pretty hard to find.

im sure the 'special sand' is special because of the weight or density of the sand and its relation to the gph flow to suspend the sand

Any sand that has irregular grains will do since water flow is easily controlled. Finer sand (lighter) is generally prefered because it is easier to re-fluidise if it compacts after a power outage but too fine will easily blow out. I put in a few small pebbles to break up possible clumping.

Some sand will buffer water which may or may not be good for you.
