Total ray noob here. I'm hoping to get another tank up and running in the near future for the benefit of my son. However, thanks to my living situation, the biggest I can manage for the time being is a 150. I'll probably be able to get something larger in less than a year, but we all know how that game goes and I don't want to buy anything I know I can't house lol.

I'm interested in rays because my boy absolutely loves rays, so I'd like him to have one. Filtration, once established, shouldn't be a problem. I'll be running a couple FX5s and a Wlim bioglass 16 on the tank.

While I know I *could* do it, please tell me whether or not it would be fair to and healthy for the animal. Google seems to think that these guys could survive in a 75, but I know it'll need more than that.

*flame suit on*

I'd say a male would be fine however retics aren't really the best beginner ray as they are often more difficult to feed for a variety of reasons. Maybe a Hystrix or male marble?

Agree any male marble will be fine in the 150for a long time

I was just offered a male marble the other day and turned it down because I thought it would outgrow my 5x2x2 way too fast. If I saw this a couple days ago I'd probably have my first ray in my tank today lol. Would a male hystrix be able to live in a 5x2x2 for life?

can it live in a 5x2-yes. Should it- no.

I have had 4 Retics over the years and only lost one that had issues when I bought it.

I was fairly new to keeping stingrays at the time. So personally I feel if they are healthy and hip bones are not showing they should be fine. Feed them earthworms and don't worry about switching in any other Foods until they are eating well. Just my personal experience.

But captive-bred is definitely the way to go over wild-caught

I love marble motoros. I'm gonna start looking for a male pup once the tank is up and throughly cycled. Thanks folks :)
